BECOME A VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBER

Becoming a MIM volunteer team member is a unique opportunity to help the museum achieve its mission. We need volunteers for positions throughout the museum, including at Guest Service, in the galleries, and leading tours. Current volunteer opportunities and descriptions are listed below. Training is provided!

Prospective volunteer team members must:

  • Submit a completed application
  • Meet with a member of the Volunteer Department
  • Consent to a background check and drug test
  • Complete Orientation training

Because volunteers are such an important part of the museum’s mission, MIM requires adult volunteer team members to maintain museum membership. We also require you to commit to the volunteer program for one full year, with a minimum of two shifts per month.

If you are a high school or a full-time college student and you want to volunteer during your school break, we ask that you dedicate one full month of service during our summer volunteer program, with a minimum of two shifts per week. If you are interested in volunteering year-round, we ask that you commit to at least two shifts per month. Student volunteer team members are not required to maintain museum membership. To volunteer, you must be at least 16 years old, and parental or guardian consent is required for volunteers under 18.

Volunteer Team Member Opportunities

Lead Tours

Museum guides are fun, imaginative, and enthusiastic volunteer team members who lead tours for school and youth groups. They encourage guests to forge their own connections to the museum’s collections and stories. Museum guides must commit to 40 hours of training over five and a half weeks. After the training, they must commit to a minimum of three tours per month.

Provide Friendly Assistance in Gallery Spaces

Gallery guides welcome guests to the galleries, answer their questions, and direct them to programs and areas of interest. Gallery guides also roam through the museum to ensure guest safety and the security of the collection.

Encourage Music Making in the Experience Gallery

The Experience Gallery is where guests can touch and play instruments from around the world. Experience Gallery guides foster a welcoming, positive, and safe environment for all guests. Musical experience is not required to be an Experience Gallery guide. MIM provides training and information on the gallery’s instruments as well as tips on creating a supportive and educational atmosphere.

Interact with Guests at Guest Service

Support the Guest Service team at the front desk by receiving and cleaning guests’ guidePORT systems and headphones, answering guest questions, and explaining MIM policies as needed. This is the perfect place to help a guest close their visit—you can chat about what they loved and let them know about upcoming events they might enjoy on their next visit!

Support Family-Friendly Public Programs

Celebrate your love of music, arts, and culture by lending a hand during MIM’s Signature Event weekends and education programs! MIM’s Signature Events offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities—you could operate MIM’s photo booth or help guests build fun crafts. Volunteer team members are essential to making our family-friendly programs exciting and educational for all guests.

MIM is not currently recruiting volunteers for the MIM Music Theater.

“Training was a blast. The instruments easily lend themselves to education, but learning how to impart that information during a tour in a relatively short time frame to antsy 3rd graders isn’t really intuitive to most of us! But we were given the tools and the practice opportunities to make it happen.”

—Lori Reger, museum guide

“MIM is a special place, a world-class museum with special people, both volunteers and staff. It is a treat to guide visitors toward unique instruments and exhibits.”

—Bill Brand

“I enjoy being a part of this amazing museum, the educational opportunities that we have, and working with the staff and other volunteers. The displays in the museum show us music in every form and in every country in the world. It is truly a universal language.”

—Jim Cole

“As a volunteer, each day is so interesting and different. Last week a charming three-year-old member who visits each week pointed out his favorites—his excitement was so joyful.”
