You might know Chris Mann from NBC’s The Voice, but that’s only one chapter of the story.
After years of lost record deals and heartache in the music industry, Mann finally got his break on The Voice following Super Bowl XLVI with a record-breaking 37.6 million viewers. He quickly became a fan favorite with some of the most memorable performances in the show’s history. Billboard later praised his finale performances of “The Prayer” (with coach Christina Aguilera) and “You Raise Me Up” on their list of the Best Voice Performances of All Time, solidifying Mann’s place as one of the most acclaimed new artists in the world.
Following his success on The Voice, Mann boldly reimagined the classical-pop genre on his debut album, Roads. The aptly titled album represented the culmination of a long and challenging journey for this gifted and dedicated young artist, who had been pushing forward against what had appeared to be overwhelming odds. Now, he has triumphed: the record hit number one on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart and appeared among those of his idols on the Billboard Top 200 and iTunes charts. His sophomore album, Constellation, followed suit, topping the Billboard and iTunes charts once again.
With the Roads tour now behind him, Mann had a strong desire to take the stage in a different way—Broadway. He grew up performing in the theater and always dreamed of fulfilling his Broadway aspirations. Seeing an audition notice for The Phantom of the Opera, he auditioned for the role of Raoul in Los Angeles. After singing “All I Ask of You” for the casting directors, they quickly asked if he could sing “The Music of the Night” as performed by the Phantom; Mann rose to the occasion. He was quickly flown to New York City for a final audition and was eventually cast by Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber as the Phantom in the production’s twenty-fifth Anniversary North American Tour. In 2016, after seven hundred incredible performances, Mann concluded his two-year, critically acclaimed run, being hailed as “the best Phantom since Michael Crawford.”
Mann is currently recording his third full-length album, Urban Songbook, featuring urban / hip hop reinventions of his favorite standards from the Great American Songbook. Often regarded as one of the most versatile singers around, he always aims to stretch himself as an artist and to let his music reflect his wide range of influences. On Urban Songbook, Mann says, “If Justin Timberlake were reinventing standards—that would be Urban Songbook.” Top it off with original, Top 40-ready singles and you’ve got the recipe for a new standard.
