Reflecting fundamental elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha—the name translates to “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language—creates a world of unexpected music. The band was formed in 2004 at the Kiev Center for Contemporary Art by avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Theater work has left its mark on the band’s performances—its shows are never staged without dramatic effect.
The band adds rhythms of the surrounding world into Ukrainian folk music, creating a bright, unique, and unforgettable sound. Accompanied by traditional Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian instruments, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. Working at the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater, its music ranges from intimate to riotous, plumbing the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms and inspiring cultural and artistic liberation.
