Mary Fahl is an expressive, emotional singer-songwriter who first achieved fame as the lead singer and cofounder of October Project, the mid-1990s chamber-pop group based in New York City. The hallmark of their sound was Fahl’s awe-inspiring power vocals over gorgeous melodies played with passion and sophistication. As a solo artist, Fahl has released several compelling albums, including the fantastic reworking of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, her original studio album The Other Side of Time, and her acclaimed album Love and Gravity. She has also written and performed songs for several major motion pictures, including the lead song, “Going Home,” for the Civil War epic Gods and Generals.
Now, Fahl returns with her album Live at the Mauch Chunk Opera House, a collection of twenty-three tracks recorded live at one of America’s oldest vaudeville theaters, the Mauch Chunk Opera House (1882) in Pennsylvania. The album won the Indie Acoustic Project Award for multi-genre album in 2014. The show was filmed for PBS and is currently airing around the country. Fahl’s elegant, cinematic songs draw on classical and world-music sources, American art songs, as well as the thinking man’s folk-pop music, which she performs with an earthy, viscerally powerful contralto that the Boston Globe calls “a voice for the gods that can transport listeners to other realms.” Her upcoming performance will include “Exiles,” a song written for Anne Rice’s new audiobook The Wolves of Midwinter; a stunning cover of the Joni Mitchell classic “Both Sides Now”; and many October Project favorites.
