Mokoomba brings audiences an electrifying blend of Afro-fusion and tantalizing traditional Tonga rhythms. The name Mokoomba stems from the deep respect that the Tonga people have for the Zambezi River and for the vibrant life that it brings to their music and culture. This exciting Tonga group from Zimbabwe has a unique sound and energy that has won them praise and awards around the world.
The group formed in 2001 and has today become a household name in Victoria Falls and throughout Zimbabwe. Their road to fame began when they won the Music Crossroads Interregional Festival (IRF) Competition in 2008 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The IRF jury members chose them because of their great potential, strong musical material, and excellent lead and backing vocals supported by a tight, strumming groove.
Mokoomba created a real buzz during its first European tour in 2009. During this tour, they collaborated with the popular Dutch DJ Gregor Salto, known for his funky sets filled with soul, Latin, jazz, disco, and Afro-flavored house music. The tour was in support of the “Stand Up and Take Action, End Poverty Now!” campaign.
Recently, Makoomba has become one of the most popular African bands, playing with such icons as Hugh Masekela and Baaba Maal. Their blend of traditional rhythms and contemporary Afro-fusion music has taken the world by storm.
These Tonga musicians from the Victoria Falls region offer a new sound, unbounded by formulas, bristling with pent-up energy, and sizzling with great musicianship.

Rooted in the thumb-piano patterns of Zimbabwean tradition; and one that started with sweet, Congo-style vocal harmonies and grew into a crisp, irresistible soukous workout, complete with some synchronized dance steps.
