Instrument Spotlight: Autoharps and Guitars 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Try your hand at Johnny Cash’s and June Carter’s favorite instruments! Popular in American folk and country music, the guitar and autoharp have become emblematic of these two iconic musicians. MIM volunteer team members will be present to guide you in strumming a few chords on guitar or on a selection of autoharps from MIM’s extensive Garry Harrison Collection of fretless zithers.
Drop-In Screenings: The Johnny Cash Show 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Drop in and catch an episode or two of The Johnny Cash Show. After the success of his two live prison albums, Cash took on hosting this musical variety show on television in the summer of 1969. Although it only lasted for two seasons, the show welcomed special musical guests each week, its regulars including June Carter and the Carter Family. Join us for a screening of two different full-length episodes each day—some of which feature artists found in MIM’s Artist Gallery.

Curator Talk: “Musical Roots and Family Trees” 1:15–2:00 p.m. The Carter Family has remained central to the story of American folk and country music for nearly a century, from their early recordings to June Carter’s marriage to Johnny Cash. Join Rich Walter, PhD, MIM’s curator for United States / Canada and Europe, as he explores the remarkable and enduring musical impact of the Carter Family.
