Both multiple Grammy winners and music legends, Peter Asher and Albert Lee combine their talents for an acoustic evening of songs and stories. As one-half of the British duo Peter and Gordon, Asher provided the voice that “literally soared through Carnegie Hall” (Fox News), while Albert Lee has been called “the ultimate virtuoso” by Eric Clapton. Influenced by great American artists such as Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers in their earliest days as musicians and performers, Peter Asher and Albert Lee bring those influences to the fore in their first series of shows together as an acoustic duo.
Albert Lee began his career as a touring musician in the early sixties and soon catapulted onto the stage with artists such as Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, and Emmylou Harris. A twenty-five-year run as music director for his beloved Everly Brothers coincided with studio and stage work with Vince Gill and Roseanne Cash as well as with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr (the Concert for George). Even with all this, he found the time for over ten solo and band albums under his own moniker. His numerous studio sessions have led to four Grammy nominations and two awards.
We came to know Peter Asher through the 10 Top 40 hits by Peter and Gordon, whose debut “A World without Love” topped the charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, and over thirty other countries. Asher’s days as A&R director for the Beatles’ Apple Records made history, and he became a legend as producer and manager of James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, and a host of other musicians. He remains the only artist manager to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, and his studio work has led to two Grammy Awards for Producer of the Year.
Theirs is a history of song, and this show will reflect that history. From the Peter and Gordon catalog, Asher and Lee will harmonize on “A World without Love,” “I Go to Pieces,” “500 Miles,” and more. From Lee’s repertoire, expect the Jimmy Webb–penned title track from his new acoustic album, “The Highwayman,” Rodney Crowell’s “Till I Gain Control Again,” Hoyt Axton’s “Evangelina,” and more. And, of course, there are the mutual inspirations from the Everly Brothers’ “Crying in the Rain” and “No One Can Make My Sunshine Smile” as well as from Buddy Holly’s massive Peter and Gordon hits “True Love Ways” and “Learning the Game.” As Asher and Lee tell stories of the travels that brought them to so many of the intersections of music history, the two legends bring these timeless songs to life.
As individuals in the world of music, Peter Asher and Albert Lee have done it all. . . . They have played on—or produced—some of the biggest-selling albums ever released and performed in stadiums and concert halls all over the world. . . . In fact, their combined influence and contribution to music spans over a century and includes work with Eric Clapton, Dolly Parton and The Beatles.
