In a career spanning more than three decades, jazz pianist/composer Russell Schmidt has performed with such celebrated artists as Carl Allen, Michael Brecker, Eddie Daniels, Joe Lovano, Gerry Mulligan, Arturo Sandoval, and Clark Terry. He has released four albums as a leader, including two new recordings in the past six months: Jazz Triptych, Vol. I – The Sacred and Jazz Triptych, Vol. II – The Secular. Joining him for this trio performance are longtime collaborators Dwight Kilian (bass) and Rob Moore (drums).
Making their initial appearance at the MIM are the East Valley Jazz Cooperative (EVJC) Indigo Big Band (led by Schmidt) and the EVJC Sapphire Ensemble (directed by Paul Brewer). The Valley Jazz Cooperative is an innovative educational program offered free of charge to talented music students in eighth through twelfth grade. Students participating in this year’s EVJC come to the program from twelve different area schools.
Appearing throughout the program, guest saxophonist Lucas Pino returns to his Arizona roots from his current residence in New York City. During the past fifteen years, he has performed with many acclaimed artists, including Dave Brubeck, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, Benny Green, Jimmy Heath, Christian McBride, and David Sanborn. Pino has led the inventive No Net Nonet for nearly a decade, and his most recent recording, That’s a Computer, is now available through Outside In Music.
