His refusal to pigeonhole his music . . . to meet anyone else’s expectations allowed him to retain his cult following without ever achieving the stardom that his talent seemed to merit.

Shawn Phillips is the man who Bill Graham called “the best-kept secret in the music business,” who taught Joni Mitchell how to play the guitar, and who gave George Harrison of the Beatles his first sitār lessons. He wrote the music to Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” and has played with many of the world’s finest musicians, including Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. He has produced 27 albums and is known worldwide for his refusal to bow down to music industry commercialism.
He has done what many singer-songwriters do not do, which is to continue to evolve his creative skills in his concerts. When he comes into a venue, he plays the songs that so many love as close as possible to their album versions—all in real time and all by himself. On his 2024 tour, Phillips is debuting a powerful new show.
