One of today’s most electric, transfixing performers in any genre.
—Rolling Stone
Tagaq projects sounds that carry the imprint of the body’s secret contours and recesses, delving far beyond personal utterance, out beyond human identity, to summon voices from the flesh cavity haunts of animal spirits and primal energies.

Tagaq goes to places in her music that few others dare to tread.

As part of MIM’s 10th Anniversary in 2020, MIM’s Music Theater will present the Global Masters Series, which celebrates the creativity and musicianship of artists at the pinnacle of their craft. Each performance brings a unique perspective to the question of why music matters, helping us understand the deep connections we all have to music.
Celebrated Inuk throat-singer Tanya Tagaq employs exquisite, unnerving vocal improvisations that bridge traditional roots with contemporary culture. Her music is like nothing you’ve heard before: a contortion of punk, metal, and electronica into a complex and contemporary sound that begins in breath, a communal and fundamental phenomenon.
Tagaq is an improvisational singer, avant-garde composer, and bestselling novelist. A member of the Order of Canada, winner of the Polaris Music Prize and JUNO Award, and recipient of multiple honorary doctorates, Tagaq is one of the Canada’s most original and celebrated artists. Her improvisational approach lends itself to collaboration across genres and forms. Her work includes numerous guest vocal appearances (Buffy Sainte-Marie, Weaves, A Tribe Called Red), original avant-garde classical compositions (Kronos Quartet, Toronto Symphony Orchestra), commissions, and more. Her novel Split Tooth was longlisted for the 2018 Giller Prize. Tagaq’s art challenges static ideas of genre and culture, and contends with themes of environmentalism, human rights, and post-colonial issues.
