Yungchen Lhamo’s voice is an instrument that needs no adornment, a rich soprano of impossibly clear tone, with a light touch that belies a potent flow of energy.
—Newsweek
She’s a singer who works best in the abstract, unshackled by bass or rhythms, where her voice can soar freely.
—AllMusic
Singer Yungchen Lhamo was born and raised in Lhasa, Tibet. Her name, which translates into English as “goddess of melody,” was given to her by a lama at birth. In 1989, she made the monthlong, 1,200-mile journey across the Himalayas to Dharamsala, India, the home of the Dalai Lama, to pursue her spiritual practice. Lhamo later moved to Australia, where she began to sing prayers of meditation that inspired her to record her first album, Tibetan Prayer, which won the Australian Recording Industry Award for Best World Music Album in 1995. She was signed by Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, on which she released four more albums—including her latest, One Drop of Kindness, released in September 2023. Across all her albums, Lhamo’s music is inspired by spirituality and Tibetan mantras, exploring love, compassion, offerings, wisdom, and spiritual awakening.
