Prolific composer and guitarist Kevin Eubanks is well known as the former music director of The Tonight Show Band, appearing on the show between 1992 and 2010. His laid-back style and affability belie the concentration and focus that have made him successful as a consummate musician and household name among late-night TV viewers.
Pianist Orrin Evans emerged in the 1990s as one of the young lions of straight-ahead jazz. His main focus is hard bop, but he has detoured into soul-jazz and R&B. Once a member of The Bad Plus, Evans frequently tours with his own trio and the Captain Black Big Band.
Due March 18, Eubanks-Evans-Experience brings Eubanks and Evans together for a set that’s as wide-ranging and unpredictable as audiences have come to expect from these two risk-takers. The repertoire veers from gut-rumbling blues to delicate, airy impressionism, mixing on-the-spot originals with funk-jazz deep cuts and classic tunes by jazz masters. Though the record marks the pair’s debut as a duo, there’s an inviting ease and scintillating chemistry that speaks to their parallel histories and shared fearlessness.
